Humaita
Ñeembucú, Paraguay
Why visit Humaita?
Humaitá is a historic town in Ñeembucú department, located on the Paraguay River near the Argentine border. It was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Triple Alliance War (1864–1870), when Paraguayan forces fortified the area against the allied advance. The town was almost completely destroyed and never fully recovered its former importance. Today it is a quiet river community with a powerful historical resonance, home to the ruins of the Fortín de Humaitá, a church that survived the bombardment, and a small museum. The climate is subtropical; the dry winter months (May–September) are the best time to visit.
