Villa Franca

Ñeembucú, Paraguay

Why visit Villa Franca?

Villa Franca is a town in northern Ñeembucú department, on the bank of the Paraguay River about 76 km from the department capital, Pilar. It was founded in 1775 by Spanish governor Fernando de Pinedo, originally as a defensive reduction to guard the northern Ñeembucú coast against raids by Brazilian tribes and bandeirantes, in alliance with the Mbokovi people; the area had previously been inhabited by the Payaguá, Agaz, and other river peoples known for their resistance to the Guaraní. Under José Gaspar de Francia's government the area's defenses were reinforced further with the Humaitá fort, and the earlier Villa Remolinos was relocated permanently to the present site on the Paraguay River. With a population of about 1,138, Villa Franca is the second-least-populated municipality in Paraguay; residents work primarily in agriculture, ranching, and fishing. For most of its history the town was reachable only with difficulty; Route PY19, opened in October 2023, finally connected Villa Franca and its neighbors (Villeta, Villa Oliva, Alberdi, Mburica, Pilar) with an all-weather road. The climate is subtropical; the best time to visit is May–September.
