Fram
Itapúa, Paraguay
Why visit Fram?
Fram, in southern Itapúa department, takes its name from Norwegian ("forward") — not from any Mennonite origin. It began on a 68,000-hectare tract acquired in 1928 by Norwegian businessman Pedro Cristophersen for timber extraction. In 1935, coinciding with a wave of Eastern European emigration to South America, Cristophersen founded the colonization company "Fram," managed by Mateo Sánchez, who became a leading figure in the new community. From 1935 on, a steady stream of Slavic immigrants — chiefly Ukrainians and Poles, along with Belarusians and Russians — arrived fleeing war, political persecution, and economic crisis in Eastern Europe. The colony was elevated to district status by Law No. 379/56 on August 28, 1956. Today Fram is a cosmopolitan district where descendants of Ukrainian, Polish, Russian, Japanese, and German settlers live alongside a significant native Paraguayan population.
