Natalio

Itapúa, Paraguay

Why visit Natalio?

Natalio is a district of Itapúa department, about 45 km from Route PY06, which links Encarnación with Ciudad del Este. The origin of its name is not fully settled, but the most likely account traces it to around 1930, the era of the mensú (indentured laborers of the Alto Paraná region): Natalio is said to have been an indigenous Correntino foreman who worked for an Argentine landowner surnamed Barthe, living at a river port that took his name, overseeing the ox-carts hauling felled timber and the workers logging the Alto Paraná's Atlantic Forest. The district was created and elevated to district status by Decree-Law No. 484 on December 4, 1974, initially under the name Domingo Robledo (honoring a mayor of that name assassinated in 1972), separating from Capitán Meza district. As of the 2022 census it had about 14,900 inhabitants. Its soil is considered among the most fertile in the department, part of what is thought to be the only continuous fertile-land belt of its kind remaining in the Americas: the Alto Paraná basin.
