Maria Auxiliadora
Itapúa, Paraguay
Why visit Maria Auxiliadora?
María Auxiliadora, named for the Marian devotion "Mary Help of Christians" whose feast falls May 24, lies about 118 km from Encarnación, the Itapúa department capital. The settlement began as an urban center for the area's surrounding agricultural colonies, created by Resolution No. 468/78 of the Rural Welfare Institute on June 26, 1978, and was formally established as a district by Law No. 1009 on September 22, 1983. Itapúa department more broadly was a focus of Japanese agricultural colonization: under a 1956 Japan–Paraguay agreement, Japan acquired 84,000 hectares in Itapúa for settlement, and the first group of 130 Japanese immigrants arrived at Encarnación in August 1960, going on to found nearby colonies including Santa Rosa, La Paz, Fuji, and Pirapó.
