Nueva Alborada

Itapúa, Paraguay

Why visit Nueva Alborada?

Nueva Alborada is a district of Itapúa department, about 30 km from Encarnación, the department capital. The land was originally part of a large estate belonging to the Argentine company Herrera y Vegas ("Zona Grande"), known as the Rafael Herrera Vegas holding, which the company began subdividing in 1912. The first Finnish colonists arrived in 1926, followed a decade later by Ukrainians; the district is one of Itapúa's oldest European-settled colonies, with German, Finnish, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, and Spanish roots. During Alfredo Stroessner's government the colony was elevated to district status under the name Capitán Vicente Antonio Matiauda, honoring an early Itapúa independence-era official, separating from the Jesús and Trinidad district. Under president Andrés Rodríguez the district was later renamed Nueva Alborada, the name it holds today. It is known locally as the "Capital de la Miel" (Capital of Honey) for its honey production, and promotes itself around natural tourism.
