Yuty
Caazapá, Paraguay
Why visit Yuty?
Yuty, about 98 km south of Caazapá city and 330 km southeast of Asunción, is one of the oldest and most historically significant towns in Paraguay. It was founded on October 4, 1611 by the Spanish Franciscan missionary Luis de Bolaños as the mission of San Francisco de Yuty, part of a Franciscan presence in the Yuty and Caazapá reductions dating to 1607. Its patron is the Virgen de la Natividad. The name's origin has two competing explanations: one traces it to Guaraní yu + ty ("place of thorns"), the other to the phrase "Ayu aty hagui" ("I come from the meeting place"), contracted over time into "Yuty." The district has a population of roughly 22,000.
