Doctor Moises Santiago Bertoni

Caazapá, Paraguay

Why visit Doctor Moises Santiago Bertoni?

Doctor Moisés Santiago Bertoni is a district in Caazapá department, roughly 260 km from Asunción, between the towns of Caazapá and Yuty. It began as a rail settlement called Estación Sosa, founded around 1880, and was renamed on July 27, 1931 (Decree No. 40,843, under President José P. Guggiari) in honor of Swiss-Paraguayan naturalist Moisés Santiago Bertoni, who worked in eastern Paraguay and was the first scientist to describe the stevia plant, in 1899. The district sits in one of Paraguay's higher-rainfall departments, favoring agricultural production; it has a population of roughly 5,000. Note this district is a namesake honoring Bertoni — his actual field research station, the Puerto Bertoni scientific monument, is located elsewhere in eastern Paraguay, in Alto Paraná department near the Iguazú area.
