Abai
Caazapá, Paraguay
Why visit Abai?
Abaí is the largest district by area in Caazapá department and one of the country's larger agricultural zones. Its first settlers were workers brought in by Italian entrepreneur José Fassardi, who began installing a mechanized sawmill in 1914 after acquiring roughly 372,000 hectares of forest covering the whole of present-day Abaí. A railway began serving the area in 1918, initially to haul timber and workers to the sawmill and later used for passenger transport. Abaí became a district by law on October 4, 1960; its central church was built in 1962 after the arrival of Father Juan de Dios Bogado, for whom the town's central plaza is named. The Cordillera de Caazapá divides the district into a lowland zone, where most businesses are based, and an upland zone centered on the Tupã Renda company, the district's most productive.
