Fulgencio Yegros

Caazapá, Paraguay

Why visit Fulgencio Yegros?

Fulgencio Yegros, roughly 278 km southeast of Asunción, was founded by law as an immigrant colony on July 25, 1888, with Santiago Schaerer — Paraguay's General Commissioner of Immigration — as its founding administrator. The settlement passed through several names before settling on its current one honoring independence hero Fulgencio Yegros: Correntino settlers first called it "Villarrica," it was then decreed "Puesto Naranjo," then "San Fernando del Espíritu Santo," and French settlers from Picardy called it "La Nouvelle Picardie"; from 1891 it was "Colonia Nacional," then "Colonia Juan G. González." Its town plan is unusual for Paraguay — a grid crossed by two diagonals, with a central plaza and four corner plazas converging toward the center, said to be the country's first planned town layout. The local economy runs on cattle raising, sugarcane and orange growing, wood, and small-scale distilling and cheese production.
