Maciel

Caazapá, Paraguay

Why visit Maciel?

Maciel sits in the northwestern part of Caazapá department, about 12 km from Caazapá city and 248 km from Asunción. It was founded on December 17, 1892 as "San Francisco Cué" by Italian entrepreneurs engaged in timber exploitation, and later took its current name from Colonel Manuel Antonio Maciel, a hero of the 1864–70 war. It separated from Caazapá as its own district on April 24, 1918. With 3,461 inhabitants, it is the least populated district in the department. The old railroad station, though abandoned, is a local point of interest. The economy runs on forest exploitation, orange harvesting, and cattle ranching, with the Santa Isabel Sugar Mill (built around 1989) a major employer.
