Tavai

Caazapá, Paraguay

Why visit Tavai?

Tavaí, about 313 km from Asunción, spreads over the Monte Rosario mountain range on the edge of the Caaguazú range, where the best-known hills — Cerro Mbatoví, Tupasy, and Kororó — are found. Its Guaraní name means roughly "small town." Settlement dates to 1973, but Tavaí only became independent from San Juan Nepomuceno in 1992 (the last of that group of districts to do so, alongside Buena Vista, General Morínigo, and Abaí) and was declared a municipality in 1993, with Lucidio Gamarra Franco as its first mayor. High rainfall gives the district strong agricultural conditions; the 2022 census recorded 16,409 residents, with cotton, soy, sugarcane, corn, and cassava as the main crops, soy increasingly dominant.
