Wonenara

Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea

Why visit Wonenara?

Wonenara is a remote station in the far southeast of Eastern Highlands Province, lying at the transition zone between the Highlands and the Gulf lowlands. It is the administrative centre for the Wonenara Rural LLG and one of the least-accessible government stations in the province. The area is sparsely populated by Fore and Kukukuku (Anga) speaking groups, who live in isolated hamlets on the forested ridges and valleys that drain toward the Gulf.

Wonenara has no road, no regular flights, and virtually no infrastructure for visitors. It is included for completeness and for the very occasional adventure traveller, birdwatcher, or researcher with the means and permits to access the area.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Wonenara has a grass airstrip served by MAF charter. No scheduled service.

Walking only. No roads.

What are the things to do?

  • Fore / Anga transition zone — cultural borderland between the Fore of the Highlands and the Anga (Kukukuku) of the Gulf slope; distinctive material culture including the Anga's characteristic bark-cloth capes.

  • Montane and lowland rainforest — the elevation gradient from 2,000 m down to 500 m produces a steep ecological transition with rich biodiversity.

  • Multi-day expedition trekking — from Okapa via the Fore-Ana border into Wonenara and beyond to the Gulf lowlands; requires guide, permits, camping gear, and dry-season timing.

  • Birdwatching — the area holds species from both Highlands and lowland PNG forest systems.
