Lufa

Eastern Highlands, Papua New Guinea

Why visit Lufa?

Lufa is a small district station in southern Eastern Highlands Province, located at the edge of the Highlands escarpment where the mountains drop steeply toward the Ramu River valley to the north. It serves as the administrative centre for the Lufa District and is one of the less-developed district capitals in the province. The surrounding country is rugged and forested, inhabited by Gahuku and related highland groups practising mixed subsistence farming on steep cleared slopes.

Lufa is very much off the tourist track — there are no attractions directed at visitors, no hotels, and no restaurants. It is a passing point for those exploring the remote northern escarpment of the Highlands or the headwaters of the Ramu.

By Car / Road

Lufa is reached via an unsealed road from Goroka (45 km, 1–1.5 hr). A 4WD is not essential in dry conditions but recommended after rain. PMVs from Goroka run when the road permits.

The station is walkable. Surrounding villages are connected by foot trails.

What are the things to do?

  • Ramu escarpment views — the road to Lufa crosses the Highlands escarpment edge, offering dramatic views north over the Ramu plains to the Finisterre Range.

  • Lufa District office and market — a small, utilitarian market serving local villages.

  • Escarpment trekking — the Lufa area is a starting point for multi-day walks north toward the Ramu and Madang provinces; requires a guide and permits.

  • Birdwatching — the escarpment forests hold highland and mid-montane bird species not found in the central Highlands.
