Why visit Henganofi?

Henganofi is a small town in Eastern Highlands Province, located on the Highlands Highway roughly 30 km southeast of Goroka. It is the administrative centre for the Henganofi District and sits in a broad valley at around 1,600 m elevation, surrounded by coffee gardens, kunai grass slopes, and scattered forest remnants. The local population is mainly Gahuku-speaking, and the district is known for its coffee production, Sunday church congregations, and the annual Henganofi Show, a smaller-scale sing-sing and agricultural fair.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Goroka Airport (GKA) is 30 km northwest (30–40 min drive). Mount Hagen Airport (HGU) is about 100 km west via the Highlands Highway.

By Car / Road

Henganofi is on the sealed Highlands Highway, 30 minutes southeast of Goroka. PMVs run frequently (K10–15 from Goroka). Charter vehicle from Goroka: K150–250.

The town is walkable. For outlying villages, PMVs and walking.

What are the things to do?

  • Henganofi Market — a colourful Highlands produce market, quieter than Goroka but strong in seasonal vegetables, coffee, and bilum bags.

  • Henganofi Show grounds — the venue for the district's annual sing-sing (typically around August–September).

  • Coffee plantation visits — several smallholder cooperatives welcome visitors to see the cherry-to-bean process.

  • Village walks — guided walks to surrounding Gahuku villages to observe daily life, gardening, and coffee processing.
