Pankshin
Plateau, Nigeria
Why visit Pankshin?
Pankshin is a hill town and local government headquarters in central Plateau State, Nigeria, situated on the Jos Plateau at elevations between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level. Founded as a highland administrative post during the British colonial era, the town serves as the principal cultural and economic center for the Ngas (Angas) ethnic group. Agriculture forms the base of the local economy, supported by fertile volcanic soil and cooler temperatures that allow for the cultivation of Irish potatoes, maize, yams, and temperate vegetables.
Visitors travel to Pankshin primarily for hill trekking, observing traditional Ngas cultural events, or accessing the Federal University of Education, Pankshin (formerly the Federal College of Education, upgraded in 2024). The surrounding terrain features steep granite formations such as the Manung and Wulmi hills, as well as extinct volcanic craters, making the area one of the main hiking destinations on the central plateau.
Due to its high altitude, Pankshin experiences a tropical highland climate that is significantly cooler than the surrounding Nigerian lowlands. Daytime temperatures average 20–25°C throughout most of the year, though nighttime temperatures during the dry winter season frequently fall to 10–14°C.
