Zuru
Kebbi, Nigeria
Why visit Zuru?
Zuru is a town in Kebbi State, headquarters of the Zuru Emirate, an area of about 9,000 square kilometers administratively divided into five chiefdoms — Dabai, Danko, Fakai, Sakaba, and Wasagu — each led by a third-class chief; Zuru town itself sits within the Dabai chiefdom. The "Zuru people" are not a single ethnic group but a collection of indigenous communities, including the Dakarkari (also called Lelna), Fakawa, Kambari, and several others. Lelna/Dakarkari is the primary language, though Hausa is widely used as a lingua franca. The modern emirate emerged from the old Dabai Emirate after the British conquest in 1900, with the Zuru Emirate developing from 1919 onward. The area is known for hosting the annual Uhola Cultural Festival, a celebration of Zuru heritage.
