Argungu
Kebbi, Nigeria
Why visit Argungu?
Argungu is a town in Kebbi State on the Sokoto (Kebbi) River, famous worldwide for the Argungu Fishing Festival. Historically, after the Hausa state of Kebbi fell to the Fulani Empire in 1808, Kebbi's rulers fled to Argungu and founded a new emirate there; the town was later contested by Gwandu and by the end of the 19th century had become de facto independent before its conquest by the British in 1902. Today Argungu is the seat of the Argungu Emirate and a regional agricultural center for crops including tobacco, groundnuts, rice, millet, wheat, and sorghum. Its name is said to derive from a Kebbi fishing call meaning roughly "let us gather in one place."
The festival itself is a multi-day event held annually, usually in February or March, centered on the Kabanchi fishing competition in which hundreds of fishermen enter the river with hand nets and calabashes to catch the largest fish.
