Aleiro

Kebbi, Nigeria

Why visit Aleiro?

Aleiro (also spelled Aliero) is a town in Kebbi State, the headquarters of Aleiro Local Government Area, covering about 350 square kilometers with a population of roughly 66,000 at the 2006 census. Its name is said to come from two prominent Fulani scholars, Ali and Yero. The settlement dates to the late 16th century, founded by the Namasawa and Kabawa peoples, and grew through the 17th century as migrants from Borno, Nupeland, Zamfara, and Mali settled the area's fertile land.

Aliero LGA has a strong agricultural economy and is known as one of Nigeria's largest onion-producing areas, alongside mangoes, rice, and guinea corn. Traditional bonesetting is also a notable local occupation.
