Daura

Katsina, Nigeria

Why visit Daura?

Daura is one of the oldest Hausa city-states, in northern Katsina State, and is traditionally regarded as the spiritual home of the Hausa people. According to the Bayajidda legend, the hero Bayajidda arrived at Daura after crossing the Sahara and married the local queen, Daurama, after slaying a great snake that had blocked the town's water access; their descendants are said to have gone on to found the rulers of Daura, Katsina, Zazzau, Gobir, Kano, and Rano, which together with Biram form the "Hausa Bakwai," the seven original Hausa states. During the Fulani War of 1805 the Fulani warrior Malam Ishaku took over Daura and founded an emirate; a rival Daura polity centered on Zango, founded in 1825, later became more prominent, and in 1903–04 the British installed Zango's ruler as emir of a unified Daura. Daura became part of the newly created Katsina State in 1987.
