Funtua
Katsina, Nigeria
Why visit Funtua?
Funtua is a major commercial centre in southern Katsina State, the headquarters of Funtua Local Government Area. It rose to prominence as a cotton town: the British Cotton Growing Association established a ginnery and experimental station here around 1926, and a branch railway built in the 1920s carried cotton and other agricultural exports out of the surrounding hinterland. Textile production remained central to the town's economy through the 1970s cotton boom; Funtua Textiles Limited, one of the few textile companies still operating in Nigeria, continues ginning, spinning, weaving, and finishing cotton here today.
