Cross River State, in the far south-east of Nigeria bordering Cameroon, is one of the country's most beautiful and biodiverse regions. Its capital, Calabar, is Nigeria's cleanest and most historic city, with a colonial charm that sets it apart from the chaos of Lagos or Port Harcourt. The state encompasses the extraordinary Cross River National Park — a vast swath of primary tropical rainforest, home to drill monkeys, chimpanzees, forest elephants, and the highest concentration of butterflies on earth. The Obudu Plateau (the "Obudu Mountain Resort") offers cool highland escapes with cable-car rides over the forest canopy. The state's geography ranges from Atlantic beaches in the south (Calabar River estuary) to the montane forests of the Sankwala Mountains and the Oban Hills. Cross River is the cultural heartland of the Efik, Ejagham, and Boki peoples, and the annual Calabar Carnival (December) is Nigeria's biggest street party.
When is the best time to visit?
The dry season (November–February) is ideal — the Calabar Carnival in December is the state's highlight. The rainy season (March–October) brings heavy rain to the rainforest areas (Cross River National Park is wettest June–September). The Obudu Plateau is cool and pleasant year-round but best accessed in the dry season.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
The Calabar–Ikom road connects the capital to the northern part of the state (2–3 hours). The East–West Road links Calabar to Port Harcourt (3 hours) and Uyo (1.5 hours). For Cross River National Park, a 4WD vehicle is essential, especially in the wet season. Speedboats connect Calabar to Oron (Akwa Ibom) and other coastal communities. Taxis and keke tricycles are the main local transport in Calabar.
What should you eat?
Cross River is famous for its seafood — fresh prawns, crab, barracuda, and croaker from the Calabar River and the Atlantic. Edikang Ikong (a vegetable soup with spinach and waterleaf, cooked with meat and fish) is the state's signature dish. Afang Soup (made with wild spinach and waterleaf) is another Efik delicacy. Fresh pepper soup with fish or goat is widely available. Calabar's night market on Marian Road is the best place for street food.

WhatsAppWhat is the culture like?
The Calabar Carnival (December) — Africa's biggest street party — is a month-long festival of parades, calypso music, dance competitions, and costume displays. The Calabar Boat Regatta (December) features traditional canoes racing on the Calabar River. The Obudu International Mountain Race (November) attracts international athletes to the steep slopes of the Obudu Plateau. The Efik culture is rich in masquerades, with the Ekpe (leopard) society being the most prominent traditional institution.
