Why visit?

Bauchi State is a large, landlocked state in north-eastern Nigeria, named after its capital Bauchi city. The state is defined by rolling savannah plains, river basins (the Gongola and Jama'are), and the dramatic granite inselbergs that punctuate the landscape. The name "Bauchi" is said to derive from the Hausa word "Baushe," meaning "a hunter" — a reference to the hunter who founded the Bauchi Emirate in the 19th century. The state is home to Yankari National Park, Nigeria's premier wildlife reserve, with its hot springs, elephants, and vast game-viewing areas.

The state's population is predominantly Hausa-Fulani, with significant communities of Sayawa, Jarawa, and other Plateau groups. Agriculture is the backbone of the economy, with millet, maize, cotton, and groundnuts as main crops. Bauchi city is the site of the Tomb of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria's first Prime Minister, and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, one of the country's prominent institutions of higher learning.

The best time to visit is during the dry season when the park roads are open and game-viewing is at its peak. The region is generally safe for travel, with the main attractions being wildlife, historic emirate architecture, and the riverine landscapes of the Gongola and Jama'are valleys.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season (November–March) is ideal, especially for Yankari National Park. The Harmattan (December–February) brings cooler, dusty conditions. The rainy season (April–October) is heavy, with peak rainfall in August, making some park roads impassable. The Bauchi Durbar festival (around Eid) is a spectacular horse-riding display.
