Lelystad

Flevoland, Netherlands

Why visit Lelystad?

Lelystad is the capital of Flevoland, a planned city named after Cornelis Lely, the civil engineer and politician who championed the Zuiderzee Works that created the province. While it is often overshadowed by the larger and architecturally flashier Almere, Lelystad offers a surprising concentration of attractions, mostly on the outskirts of the city. Its main draws include the Bataviawerf (a working replica of a 17th-century VOC ship), the Aviodrome aviation museum, the Nieuw Land heritage centre, and the vast Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve.

The city itself is young — the first houses were completed in the late 1960s — and its centre is more functional than picturesque. However, Lelystad's coastal location on the IJmeer and Markermeer provides a pleasant waterfront atmosphere, and its spacious layout makes it easy to navigate by bike or car.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS IATA) is the closest major airport, about 50 minutes by direct train. Lelystad Airport (LEY IATA) serves general aviation and hosts the Aviodrome museum, but has no scheduled commercial flights.

By Train

Lelystad Centrum station is on the Flevolijn/Hanzelijn railway corridor, with frequent Intercity and Sprinter services to Almere (10 min), Amsterdam (30 min), Schiphol (50 min), Utrecht (40 min), and Zwolle (30 min).

By Car / Road

Lelystad is on the A6 motorway, which connects Almere to the south and Emmeloord and Friesland to the north. The N302 (Houtribdijk) provides a scenic route from Enkhuizen in North Holland across the Markermeer.

The city is spacious and best navigated by bike or car. A city bus network serves residential areas. The attractions are spread out — Bataviawerf is on the waterfront 4 km east of the station, Aviodrome is near the airport on the city's southern edge, and Oostvaardersplassen is west of the city.

What are the things to do?

  • Bataviawerf (Bataviahaven) — A full-scale replica of the Batavia, a 17th-century VOC merchant ship, under construction using traditional methods. The shipyard also houses the Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum, documenting the history of the Zuiderzee Works and Flevoland's archaeology.

  • Aviodrome (Lelystad Airport) — The national Dutch aviation museum, with a large collection of aircraft, simulators, and aviation artifacts. Located at Lelystad Airport.

  • Oostvaardersplassen — A vast rewilded nature reserve west of the city, home to Konik horses, red deer, Heck cattle, and thousands of waterbirds. Accessible by bike, foot, or guided tours from the visitor centre.

  • Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet — A shopping outlet centre near the Bataviawerf with discounted brand-name stores.

  • Natuurpark Lelystad — A nature park with walking trails and a wildlife management area.

  • Birdwatching in the Oostvaardersplassen — one of the most important wetlands in Western Europe.
