Swifterbant

Swifterbant is a small village in the municipality of Dronten, eastern Flevoland, with a population of about 6,000. It is best known for the archaeological discoveries that gave its name to the Swifterbant culture — a mesolithic-to-neolithic society that inhabited the region between 7,500 and 5,500 years ago, making it one of the earliest known farming cultures in northwestern Europe.

The modern village was established in the 1950s and 1960s as part of the post-war development of the Flevopolder. While the village itself is quiet and residential, it attracts archaeology enthusiasts who come to learn about the prehistoric inhabitants of what was then a landscape of tidal creeks, marshland, and sand ridges. The archaeological finds from the Swifterbant area are displayed in Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum in Lelystad.

By Train

Swifterbant has no railway station. The nearest stations are Dronten (5 km) and Lelystad Centrum (15 km), both on the Flevolijn line. Bus services connect Swifterbant to Dronten.

By Car / Road

Swifterbant is accessible via the N307 provincial road, which connects to the A6 motorway at Lelystad.

The village is small and walkable. Cycling is the best way to explore the surrounding farmland and archaeological sites.
