Urk
Flevoland, Netherlands
About Urk
Urk is one of the most distinctive communities in the Netherlands — a former island in the Zuiderzee that now sits within the Noordoostpolder, surrounded by reclaimed farmland. With a population of about 21,000, Urk maintains a fiercely independent identity, with its own dialect (Urkers), its own anthem, and a strong Calvinist Protestant tradition that shapes local life. Fishing has been the backbone of the economy for centuries, and the modern harbour remains one of the largest fishing ports in the Netherlands.
Urk's history as an island — accessible only by boat until the polder was drained in 1942 — has created an insular, close-knit culture that is remarkably distinct from the rest of Flevoland. Visitors come for the authentic fishing-harbour atmosphere, the fresh seafood, and the chance to experience one of the Netherlands' most unique cultural communities. The old harbour (Oude Haventje) with its traditional wooden fishing boats is the picturesque heart of the town.
