Why visit Stampriet?
Stampriet is a village of around 3,400 people in the Hardap Region, 64 km northeast of Mariental on the upper Auob River, on the edge of the Kalahari. It was founded in 1898 as a trading post after the discovery of artesian water wells here — some boreholes yield up to 3.5 million liters a day — and windmills were installed to draw water for irrigation. The town gives its name to the Stampriet Basin, a multi-layered aquifer covering roughly 65,000 km² across Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, on which local farmers depend to irrigate grain crops like corn and lucerne in this otherwise barren, borehole-dependent area.
