Gochas

Hardap, Namibia

Why visit Gochas?

Gochas is a village of under 2,000 people in the Hardap Region, on the seasonal Auob River at the edge of the Kalahari. It has been the main settlement of the ǃKharakhoen (Fransman Nama), a Nama subtribe, since 1889. During the colonial Herero Wars, Gochas served as a German military post and camel station; in January 1905, German forces defeated Nama chief Simon Kooper here, and a German war memorial under an old camelthorn tree on the Auob River bank commemorates the skirmish. Groundwater from boreholes is the area's main water source, supporting the local population and livestock along the largely dry riverbed.
