Why visit Gibeon?
Gibeon, originally known as Khaxa-tsûs, is a historic town in the Hardap Region. It takes its current name from Kido Witbooi, the first Kaptein of the ǀKhowesin (a subtribe of the Orlam), who arrived with his followers around 1850 shortly after a Rhenish mission station was established there. The town gives its name to the Gibeon meteorite — an iron meteorite shower discovered in prehistoric times and long used by the local Nama people to make tools and weapon heads. Samples were sent to London in 1836, where astronomer John Herschel confirmed their extraterrestrial origin, and dozens of fragments were later collected from the area around Gibeon and moved to Windhoek, where they are displayed as a National Monument.
