Namaacha

Maputo, Mozambique

Why visit Namaacha?

Namaacha is a historic town in Maputo Province, on the Lebombo plateau at the border with Eswatini, about 80 km west of Maputo city. It began in the late 19th century as a Portuguese customs post — in 1895, military engineer Joaquim José Machado sketched plans here for a railway to link Lourenço Marques (Maputo) with the Transvaal — and its identity as a hill retreat crystallized between the 1920s and 1960s, when Portuguese settlers and officials from Maputo discovered the plateau's climate, often some 10°C cooler than the coast. The colonial-era villas and hotels built for that trade, many in faded ochre, pink, and mint pastels, still line the town, and the border post remains a major Mozambique–Eswatini crossing point.
