Magude

Maputo, Mozambique

Why visit Magude?

Magude is a small town in the northern part of Maputo Province, near the border with South Africa, and takes its name from Magudzo Cossa, a Tsonga king active in the area in the second half of the 19th century. It serves as the administrative centre of Magude District, a rural area of some 62,000 people whose main river is the Komati and whose economy is dominated by subsistence agriculture — corn, cassava, cowpea, peanut, and sweet potato. The surrounding landscape is savanna with scattered acacia trees and farmland.
