About Otgon Tenger Strictly Protected Area

Otgon Tenger Strictly Protected Area (SPA) is a protected region in Dzavhan Province, western Mongolia, centred on Otgon Tenger Uul ("Youngest Sky Mountain"), the highest peak of the Khangai Mountains at 4,021 m. The mountain is considered sacred in Mongolian Buddhism and is the only permanently glaciated peak in the Khangai range. The protected area covers approximately 95,000 hectares of alpine tundra, glaciers, mountain taiga, and high-altitude steppe.

The climate is high-altitude continental: very cold winters with temperatures below -30°C, and short, cool summers. Snow is possible any month of the year. The best climbing and trekking season is July and August.

Otgon Tenger is a destination for serious mountaineers and wilderness trekkers. The mountain is a national symbol — it appears on the Mongolian coat of arms — and is considered the abode of Buddhist deities. Climbing the peak is considered a sacred act.
