Ouattagouna is a small town and commune in Ansongo Cercle, in the extreme south of Gao Region near the border with Niger. The commune's clay and sandy soils support agriculture and vegetable growing along the Niger River, and a considerable part of the commune, particularly to the east of the main town, lies within the Ansongo-Ménaka animal reserve. Several small lakes are scattered across the commune.
