Bourem
Gao, Mali
Why visit Bourem?
Bourem is a commune and small town on the left bank of the Niger River in Gao Region, on the road between Gao and Timbuktu. It was historically a hub of trans-Saharan trade, and its Grand Marché has served as a commercial centre for the town since around the 15th century, part of the old network of salt-and-gold caravan routes. Today the town remains a local trading centre for agricultural products and livestock, and Songhai is the main local language, with French used in official contexts.
