Its population is predominantly Tamasheq, Peulh, and Arab, and the commune takes its name from the village of In Tillit, meaning "the place of big wood" in the local Tamasheq dialect. Livestock herding, commerce, agriculture, and craftsmanship are the main livelihoods.
