Terengganu is a state on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, bordered by Kelantan to the north and Pahang to the south. It is known for its pristine beaches, coral-rich islands, traditional Malay culture, and as the seat of Malaysia's Islamic heritage. The state's islands — Perhentian, Redang, Kapas, Lang Tengah, and Tenggol — are among the most beautiful dive destinations in Southeast Asia. The state capital is Kuala Terengganu, a city with a vibrant Chinatown, a massive Islamic heritage park, and a lively central market. Terengganu's culture is deeply rooted in Malay traditions, with a strong emphasis on batik, songket weaving, and traditional crafts.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Terengganu is during the dry season (March–October). The northeast monsoon (November–February) brings heavy rain, rough seas, and many island resorts close. The peak tourist season for the islands is May–September. The Terengganu International Squid Jigging Festival (March/April), Monsoon Cup (annual sailing event, usually March), and the Kuala Terengganu International Heritage Festival (August) are highlights. Ramadan and Hari Raya are widely observed.

WhatsAppHow do you get around?
Terengganu is best explored by car. The East Coast Expressway (LPT/Jabatan) connects Kuala Terengganu to Kuala Lumpur (4.5 hr). Local buses and taxis connect major towns. To reach the islands, ferries depart from Kuala Besut (Perhentian), Merang (Redang), Marang (Kapas), Kuala Terengganu (Lang Tengah), and Dungun (Tenggol). Grab operates in Kuala Terengganu and major towns.

WhatsAppWhat should you eat?
Terengganu's cuisine is distinct from the west coast, with a focus on seafood, coconut milk, and traditional Malay flavours. Signature dishes include nasi dagang (glutinous rice with fish curry), keropok lekor (deep-fried fish sausage — the definitive Terengganu snack), laksa Terengganu (a milder, creamier laksa), satar (grilled fish cakes in banana leaf), and akok (a sweet egg-based cake). The morning markets in Kuala Terengganu and villages across the state are the best places to sample local food.
What is the culture like?
Terengganu is the heartland of Malay culture in Malaysia. The state is known for its traditional boat-building (the perahu), songket weaving, batik, and woodcarving. Major festivals include the Monsoon Cup (international sailing), Terengganu International Squid Jigging Festival, and the Kuala Terengganu International Heritage Festival. The state celebrates Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali. The annual Kelewek Festival showcases traditional games and performances.
