Mulanje

Mulanje is a town at the foot of the Mulanje Massif, about 65 km east of Blantyre. The massif is a large granite inselberg rising sharply from the surrounding plains, with rolling grassland at 1,800–2,200 m cut by forested ravines and individual peaks over 2,500 m, including Chambe Peak, whose west face is one of the longest rock climbs in Africa. Its highest point, Sapitwa Peak (3,002 m), is the highest point in Malawi and in south-central Africa; local tradition holds the name means "do not go there," reflecting a belief that spirits inhabited the summit. The town has basic services for trekkers, including gear rental and guide services.

The climate is warm in the lowlands, cool on the mountain. The dry season from May to September is the best time for climbing.

By Car / Road

Mulanje is about 1.5 hours east of Blantyre on a paved road. Buses run from Blantyre.
