Thyolo
Southern Region, Malawi
Why visit Thyolo?
Thyolo is a town in the tea-growing highlands of southern Malawi, in the Shire Highlands, surrounded by green tea estates. The area is known for its rolling hills and several tea factories that offer tours. Satemwa Tea Estate, founded in 1923 by Scottish planter Maclean Kay and still run by his descendants, is the last of the original estates that founded Malawi's tea industry; its factory dates to 1937 and it remains a working producer of tea and coffee exported worldwide.
