Phalombe
Southern Region, Malawi
Why visit Phalombe?
Phalombe is a town near Mount Mulanje in southern Malawi. It lies on the eastern side of the Mulanje Massif, in the plains district that was carved out of the neighboring Mulanje district, and is a starting point for hikes on the mountain. The district is best known outside Malawi for the Phalombe disaster of March 1991, when days of heavy rain triggered a rock avalanche and flash flood — locally called Napolo — off Michesi and Mulanje mountains, killing an estimated 700–1,000 people, destroying entire villages, and prompting Malawi's 1991 Disaster Preparedness and Relief Act.
