Why visit Sary-Chelek?

Sary-Chelek is a village and nature reserve in Jalal-Abad Region, about 100 km southwest of Jalal-Abad city. The Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve (Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve) is one of Kyrgyzstan's most beautiful protected areas, centred around the stunning Sary-Chelek Lake — a deep turquoise alpine lake surrounded by walnut and fruit forests at 1,873 m elevation.

The reserve was established in 1959 and later designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It covers 238 km² of pristine mountain ecosystems, including alpine meadows, walnut forests, and glacial valleys. The climate is milder than surrounding areas: warm summers (20-25°C) and cold winters (-10 to -15°C). June to September is the best time to visit.
