Toktogul
Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan
Why visit Toktogul?
Toktogul is a small city of about 16,000 people in Jalal-Abad Region, located in the far north of the Ferghana Valley on the main Bishkek–Osh highway. It is named after Toktogul Satylganov, a famous Kyrgyz composer and akyn (folk poet). The Toktogul Reservoir, a large artificial lake created by a hydroelectric dam on the Naryn River, dominates the area.
The city is primarily a stopover point for travellers crossing between northern and southern Kyrgyzstan, but the surrounding nature — the reservoir, mountains, and nearby valleys — makes it worth a longer stay. The climate is continental: warm summers (25-30°C) and cold winters (-10 to -20°C). Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
