About Tsuru
Tsuru (都留) is a city in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture, located along the Katsura River in a valley surrounded by mountains. The city has a strong educational presence, with Tsuru University as its centrepiece. The area is known for the Katsura River—one of the clearest rivers in Japan, ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Tsuru is also a base for climbing Mt. Fuji via the Yoshida Trail. The climate features warm summers and cool winters.

By Plane
Tokyo-Haneda (HND) and Tokyo-Narita (NRT) are the nearest major airports, about 2 hours by train.
By Train
Tsuru Station is on the JR Chuo Main Line. From Tokyo's Shinjuku Station, limited express trains (Kaiji or Azusa) take about 80 minutes (¥3,000–4,000). From Otsuki, the journey is about 10 minutes. The Japan Rail Pass covers JR services.
By Car / Road
Tsuru is accessible via the Chuo Expressway (Tsuru IC). From Tokyo, the drive is about 70 minutes. Parking is available at the station and river sports centres.
The city is compact and walkable in the central area. Local buses connect to the station and river areas. Taxis are available.

The Katsura River is the city's defining natural feature—remarkably clear, with emerald-green pools and scenic gorges. The Tsuru City Museum covers local history and natural history. Higashi-Tsuru area has temples and rural landscapes. The river bridges offer scenic photo opportunities.
