Why visit Minamikyushu?

Minamikyushu (南九州市) is a city in southern Kagoshima Prefecture, formed in 2007 by merging several towns. It is known for the Chiran Samurai District, a beautifully preserved area of samurai residences with gardens, and the Chiran Peace Museum, which commemorates the kamikaze pilots who launched from the Chiran airbase in WWII. The area also has scenic rural landscapes. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) is about 30 minutes north by car or bus.

By Train

Chiran has no railway station. The nearest station is in Ibusuki (JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line) or Kiire (JR Kagoshima Main Line), about 30–40 minutes away by bus.

By Car / Road

Route 225 connects to Kagoshima (about 40 minutes by car).

A car is essential. The samurai district is walkable once you arrive.

What are the things to do?

  • Chiran Samurai District (知覧武家屋敷群) — Seven beautifully preserved samurai residences with traditional gardens. The thatched roofs and stone walls are lovely. ¥500.

  • Chiran Peace Museum — A moving museum documenting the kamikaze pilots who departed from the Chiran base. Letters, photos, and personal effects. ¥500.

  • Chiran Castle ruins — Remains of a feudal castle with views.

  • Tea fields — The area is known for its green tea production.

  • Samurai house tour — Walk through the historic district and visit the open houses.

  • Peace Museum visit — Allow 1–2 hours.

  • Tea tasting — Sample local Chiran-cha green tea.

  • Craft workshops — Traditional craft experiences.
