Why visit Shimukappu?
Shimukappu (占冠) is a mountainous rural municipality in the Yufutsu District of Kamikawa Subprefecture in central Hokkaido. Forest covers over 90% of the village area, which is divided between the administrative settlement along Route 237 and the purpose-built Hoshino Resorts Tomamu complex about 20 km to the southeast. The Mukawa River flows through the valley, flanked by dense spruce and birch forests and the Yubari Mountain Range.
Most international and domestic visitors travel here for the all-season mountain resort at Tomamu, known for deep powder skiing in winter and high-altitude viewing platforms in summer. Outside the resort enclave, the village functions as a quiet forestry community with roadside rest stops, riverside climbing crags, and backcountry access.
The local climate is subarctic and continental, recording some of the coldest winter temperatures in Japan. Winter temperatures regularly drop below -20°C (-4°F) with heavy snow accumulation from December through April. Summer temperatures are mild to warm, averaging 20°C to 26°C (68°F to 79°F) during July and August, though mountain mornings remain cool.
