Shinhidaka

Why visit Shinhidaka?

Shinhidaka (新ひだか) is a town on Hokkaido's south-central Pacific coast, serving as the administrative and commercial centre of Hidaka Subprefecture. The town was formed in 2006 through the merger of the former towns of Mitsuishi and Shizunai. Shizunai is the largest population centre in the subprefecture and the historic heart of the area.

Shinhidaka is famous for its horse breeding industry — the Hidaka region is often called the "horse country" of Japan, producing many of the nation's finest racehorses and thoroughbreds. The rolling green pastures along the coast create a landscape reminiscent of Kentucky or Ireland.

The climate is relatively mild with warm summers (around 22°C) and cool winters with light snowfall. The best times to visit are late spring (May-June) for the lush green pastures and early autumn (September-October) for pleasant weather.

How do you get there?

By Plane

New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo is about 1.5 hours away by car, making it the most convenient gateway for domestic and international visitors.

By Train

The JR Hidaka Main Line runs through Shinhidaka, with Shizunai Station being the main stop. Limited Express services connect to Sapporo (about 2 hours) via Tomakomai. However, services on the Hidaka Main Line have been reduced in recent years, so check schedules carefully.

By Car / Road

National Route 235 runs along the coast, providing easy access from Sapporo (about 1.5-2 hours via the expressway to Tomakomai then south). Highway buses operate between Sapporo and Shinhidaka.

A rental car is the most practical way to explore the pasture lands and coastal scenery of the Hidaka region. Local buses are limited and infrequent. The Shizunai town centre is walkable.
