Larino

Molise, Italy

Why visit Larino?

Larino is a town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, with an elliptical Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD, roughly 98 metres along its major axis, once estimated to seat around 12,000 spectators; lower tiers of seating and underground service passages are still visible. Larino is also known for the Festa di San Pardo, one of the oldest continuously observed festivals in southern Italy, tracing its origins to 842 AD, when the relics of Saint Pardo were transferred to Larino from Lucera during a period of Saracen coastal raids. Held each year on 25–27 May, the festival's centerpiece is the Carrese, a procession of more than a hundred flower- and ribbon-decorated ox-drawn carts moving through the streets, accompanied by music, horses, and traditional dress.
