Isernia

Molise, Italy

Why visit Isernia?

Isernia is the second-largest city in Molise and the capital of its province. It is internationally known for the Isernia La Pineta archaeological site, uncovered in 1978 during road construction, which preserves evidence of one of the oldest known Lower Paleolithic human occupations in Europe, dated to roughly 700,000 years ago (the "Homo aeserniensis" activity there is inferred from flint and limestone tool-working and animal remains, since no human skeletal remains themselves were found). Artifacts from the site are held at the Santa Maria delle Monache Archaeological Museum, housed in a former Benedictine convent in the historic center.
