Tomohon

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Tomohon?

Tomohon is a city in the Minahasa highlands of North Sulawesi, about 30 km south of Manado. Sitting at an elevation of 700–1,000 m, it is known for its cool climate, flower gardens, vegetable farms, and dramatic volcanic landscape — including the active Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu. Tomohon is often called the "City of Flowers" due to its annual flower festival and year-round blooms.

The city is a popular escape from the heat of Manado, and is also famous for its "extreme market" (Pasar Tomohon) where vendors famously sell dog, bat, rat, python, and other exotic meats — a controversial aspect of Minahasa culinary tradition. The surrounding two volcanoes offer excellent hiking opportunities with spectacular views.

The climate is cool and pleasant, with temperatures 18–28°C. The dry season (June–October) offers the best hiking conditions.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC) in Manado is about 1 hour from Tomohon by car.

By Car / Road

From Manado, it's a scenic 1-hour drive south through the hills. Public minibuses run from Manado's terminal (Rp 20,000–30,000).

Tomohon is spread out — ojek and bentor are the main local transport. Angkot minibuses connect the town centre with outlying villages and the volcanoes.

What are the things to do?

  • Mount Lokon: An active volcano (1,589 m) with a dramatic smoking crater — a 2–3 hour guided hike to the rim. Check current activity status before climbing.

  • Tomohon Flower Festival: Annual event (usually August) with parades of flower-bedecked floats.

  • Pasar Tomohon (Tomohon Extreme Market): The famous market where dog, bat, and other unusual meats are sold — a cultural experience (sensitive visitors may prefer to skip).
