Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park?

Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park is a 1,050 km² protected area in Southeast Sulawesi, located about 65 km east of Kendari. Established in 1989, it protects a unique mosaic of savanna grassland, freshwater swamp forest, and mangrove forest on the Aopa peat swamp. It is the largest savanna area in Sulawesi and an important wetland for migratory and resident waterbirds.

The park's landscape is strikingly different from the rainforest typically associated with Sulawesi — vast open grasslands dotted with lontar palms, reminiscent of parts of Nusa Tenggara. This makes it an excellent destination for birdwatching, with over 200 species including the endemic Sulawesi hawk-eagle, maleo birds, and numerous waterbird species. The park is also home to anoa, Timor deer, and the Sulawesi warty pig.

The dry season (May–October) is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals concentrate around water sources. The wet season (November–April) floods much of the swamp forest.
