Manado

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Manado?

Manado is the capital city of North Sulawesi, located at the northern tip of the Minahasa Peninsula along Manado Bay. With a city population of roughly 463,000 and a metropolitan population exceeding 1.3 million, it is the second-largest city on Sulawesi island after Makassar. Positioned between the Sulawesi Sea and a volcanic mountain chain, the city serves as the main transit hub for marine nature reserves including Bunaken National Marine Park and the Lembeh Strait.

The local population belongs predominantly to the Minahasa ethnic group. Unlike the majority of Indonesia, Manado is overwhelmingly Christian (approximately 67% Protestant and 5% Catholic), which shapes local life, architecture, and dining. Pork dishes, fresh seafood, and fierce chili peppers feature heavily in Minahasan cooking, alongside street food markets and bakeries influenced by Dutch colonial heritage.

Manado experiences a tropical rainforest climate with high humidity and consistent warmth throughout the year. Daytime temperatures average between 24°C and 32°C (75°F to 90°F). The dry season runs from May through October, while the wet monsoon brings heavy tropical rainfall and occasional coastal winds between November and April.
